The Walker Art Gallery’s Medieval, Renaissance and Baroque displays (Rooms 1-4) will close to visitors from 6 January 2020 until spring 2021. The closure is to facilitate a major refurbishment of these galleries, funded by the Department for Digital, Media, Culture and Sport.
This will involve roof repair work as well as the redecoration of the rooms themselves. It will provide the chance to redisplay the Walker’s outstanding collection of Medieval, Renaissance and Baroque art for the first time in many years.
During this time, the artworks usually in these rooms will not be on display. Some will move to our conservation studios where they will receive essential care. The project also provides an exciting opportunity for the Walker to undertake new research on our collections.
Our new displays will include iconic paintings, sculptures and decorative arts from the Walker’s collection, as well as showcasing less familiar works. We hope to explore new stories within the galleries, and to consider how we display, and talk about, historic art.
