Spotlight Day: Egypt's Nubian Kings
No current dates available

The story of Ancient Nubia has been often neglected or misrepresented due to the prejudices and racism of archaeologists reflecting imperialist views of Africa. Much of the archaeology of Nubia was permanently destroyed when the whole of Lower Nubia was purposefully submerged under the waters of Lake Nasser when the Nile was dammed in the 1960s.
Today Nubia’s story is often explored only in relation to its more famous neighbour, Egypt, but the history and culture of this region and its people deserves its own telling.
In this spotlight day we will explore the story of Ancient Nubia, from the birth of complex cultures in the region to a civilisation that was able to challenge Egypt for supremacy and eventually conquer its northern neighbour, uniting the whole Nile Valley under the rule of kings from what is now Sudan.
The day will challenge long held beliefs about Nubia’s power, questioning why exactly warrior kings like Senwosret III had to station vast armies in massive fortresses to control their southern border and learning why Sudan contains many, many more pyramids than Egypt.
Tickets cost £25.
