Egyptian Research Account

Archaeological Organisation

The Egyptian Research Account (ERA) was founded in 1894 and enlarged as the British School of Archaeology in Egypt (BSAE) in 1906. The Honorary Director was Prof. Flinders Petrie with Mrs Hilda Flinders Petrie as the Honorary Secretary.

In 1893 William Matthew Flinders Petrie (1853-1942) became the first Edwards Professor of Egyptian Archaeology and Philology at University College London, and was able to form his own Egyptian Research Account to support excavation in Egypt. Museums, such as Liverpool, would financially support his excavations and in return would receive a share of his finds that were not allotted to the Egyptian government.
