Helen Caroline Colman was the daughter of the famous mustard manufacturer, Jeremiah James Colman (1830 - 1898). Between 1923-4 her older sister Ethel Colman served as the first female Lord Mayor of Norwich, and Helen acted as her lady mayoress.

In the winter of 1896-97 Jeremiah Colman travelled to Egypt with his children, Ethel, Helen, Florence and Alan. Around 300 ancient Egyptian artefacts were collected on the trip which upon the death in 1898 of Jeremiah was bequeathed to Ethel and Helen who kept it until 1921 when they donated it to the City of Norwich and consequently the Norwich Castle Museum.
