About this object

Central panel of a triptych, depicting a Deesis (Christ, carrying a book, flanked by the Virgin Mary and St. John the Baptist). Deesis: the Virgin and St. John the Baptist intercede with Christ the Judge. Christ is barefoot, but the Virgin and St. John are wearing shoes. He stands on a footstool. His right hand is raised in blessing and he holds a book in his left. Above, St. Peter (left), two angels with veiled hands (centre) touching Christ's halo, and St. Paul (right). The triptych to which this panel belonged served as a portable icon.

    Description: A temporary exhibition of 56 ivory carvings lent by the City of Liverpool Public Museums (now National Museums Liverpool) to the British Museum, London. The exhibition was organised by the department of Archaeology, Liverpool Museum (Elaine Tankard) and the department of British and Medieval Antiquities of the British Museum (P. Lasko). Some British Museum ivories which offer particularly close parallels with the Liverpool pieces were placed beside one another. The exhibition was held in the King Edward VII Gallery between 18 September 1954 and 3 September 1955 (extended from 5 March 1955) and an illustrated catalogue was published which cost 1s. 6d.

The exhibition incorporated over 250 objects, and was held at the British Museum in London in 1994. The exhibition was accompanied by an illustrated catalogue raisonné.
