J Thorpe

A Jesuit priest and agent to a number of British Catholic collectors in Rome. Instrumental in helping Blundell secure works and introducing him to Antonio Canova. His most constant patron was the 8th Earl of Arundell of Wardour Castle. Blundell met Thorpe while staying in Rome in 1777 and employed him for the purchase of much of the works and his philosophy of buying was very much to collect objects which were rich, fine and a good bargain and therefore similar to Blundell's. As an agent Thorpe dealt with other antiquaries and bought marbles for Pacetti and dealt with Jenkins. He combined his commercial activities with the spiritual concerns of a Jesuit priest and often criticised the great and deplorable degeneracy in Catholic families in England.
