About this collection

The Americas collections number nearly 9000 artefacts, ranging from pre-Hispanic material to the work of leading contemporary First Nations/Native American artists.  The strengths are artefacts from four main regions: the Arctic, the Northwest Coast of North America, Mesoamerica and the Amazon. 

Other important holdings come from the Northeastern Woodlands and Plains of North America, with a significant collection of pre-Hispanic material from South America.  The artefacts are provenienced to a wide variety of cultures, most notably the Haida, Kwakw a k a ’wakw and Nuu-chah-nulth of the Northwest Coast, the Arctic’s Inuit and Unangan, the Maya of Mesoamerica and the Karajá, Mundurucú, Shipibo-Conibo, Huitoto, Shuar/Achuar (Jivaro) of the Amazon region.
