Gavin Hamilton

1723-1798, artist, sculpture restorer, archaeologist, dealer in antiquities

Gavin Hamilton was initially known as a historical painter. He is, however, better known for his activities in Rome, where he lived from 1756 until his death, and was a restorer of ancient sculpture, archaeologist and dealer in antiquities.

Hamilton undertook excavations at the Villa Adriana at Tivoli from 1769 to 1771, and from 1771 excavated other sites in Rome and its surroundings.
