John Henry Rev Holmes

Missionary collector

Reverend John Henry Holmes was a member of the London Missionary Society, ordained in 1893 and appointed initally to the Fly River District of Papua, and a year later to the Elema District in the Gulf of Papua. He left Papua at the end of 1917, and retired from active service, returning to England in 1920. While in the Gulf of Papua he was a correspondent for the Royal Anthropological Institute 1903-1917 and published a number of reports on the people of the area. His major publications are 'In Primitive New Guinea' (1924) and 'Way Back in Papua' (1926).

Reverend JH Holmes' gave his artefact collection formed between 1890 and 1900, to LE and EW Sexton in 1901. In 1951 Mrs EW Sexton, who had illustrated his publications, sold the collection to the British Museum and the Liverpool Museum.
