What are the links between Europe and its most popular sport? How has Europe changed football? How has football changed Europe? From the 1870s to the present day, the milestones of European history and football were marked in the timeline section of Only A Game?

Alongside the major historical events of the period we recalled the people and tournaments that have shaped the face of modern European football, from the founding of UEFA in 1954 to Spain's victory in the 2008 European Championship.

Objects from the collection of National Football Museum also featured including Sir Stanley Matthews' Player of the Year trophy, Rafa Benietz's bag and programme from the 2005 Champions League final and Bert Trautmann's neckbrace.

The city of Liverpool's place in the history of football was not forgotten in this exhibition, with special items from the Everton Collection and from the museum of five-time European champions, Liverpool FC, adding unique local flavour.
