The shishi is a mythical beast, frequently found in Japanese painting. Playful and cute, they behave like puppies, leaping and playing with each other. Their origins were more serious, however, as, like the phoenix, they were said to appear only in times of virtuous rule, making them an auspicious symbol of a legitimate ruler
